Every year Arthur and I try to do some sort of marriage enrichment. We read a book or do a course or see a counsellor. It’s not the only thing we do to improve our relationship but it’s one thing that helps us to be pro-active about it. Read more

I’ve been wanting to read Getting Real: Challenging the Sexualisation of Girls since it came out but have had to wait until it was more affordable so this review comes later than I had hoped. Wendy has ably reviewed it here and here so I thought I’d focus more on the cultural and literary trends it exposes. So far I’ve only read the first essay by Melinda Tankard Reist entitled, ‘The Pornification of Girlhood: We haven’t come a long way baby’. Whenever I’ve said to a married woman that I’ve been reading a book about a woman who, for her husband’s 40th birthday, gives him sex every day for a year, almost every one has said, “Don’t tell my husband about that!” Most say it lightheartedly, others with a degree of panic in their eyes, but whatever the motivation, 365 Nights has sparked their interest. (Thanks to Wendy for the recommendation.)
Our Monday gym instructor just came third in the Victorian natural bodybuilding comp, qualifying for the nationals in which she will compete this weekend. It’s been fascinating watching her go from being a lean, fit looking woman down to 8% body fat and I’ve been intrigued by both the science and the discipline involved. Our class chats with her a bit about it and after bombarding her with questions this week, she offered to show us her stuff.
