Worth the watch: Chimamanda Adichie’s ‘We should all be feminists’

Last year I read Chimamanda Adichie’s Half the Yellow Sun about the Nigerian Biafran war without really knowing anything about who she is. However, she’s got a bit of press after Beyonce sampled her ‘We should all be feminists’ TED talk. Don’t make the mistake in watching this of thinking that there’s one ‘African feminism’ – Nigeria and Tanzania are worlds away from each other in a range of different ways. But she is an African and she is a feminist, and she believes that those two things can cohere.

“Some people will say that a woman being subordinate to a man is our culture. But culture is constantly changing. I have beautiful twin nieces who are 15 and they live in Lagos. If they had been born a hundred years ago they would have been taken away and killed. Because it was our culture, it was our culture to kills twins.”
