My gym is going to be closed on ANZAC Day. Fair enough, it’s a public holiday. Plus, it’s respectful to those we honour on such a national day.
But so rarely does my gym close! Other than ANZAC day, it was shut for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day I think. But Boxing Day, Australia Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, even Melbourne Cup Day and Grand Final Day (!), it was open.
ANZAC day is a solemn occasion and it’s good to recognise that. But it seems that it’s more than that too: one of the consecrated days of the year. Plenty of people have reflected over the years on the religious language used of ANZAC day. Indeed, this seems to be the one spiritual experience that all Australians can share. I was intrigued to see it playing out even at the gym.
